Critical Interview Tip From Someone Known to be Cocky That would be me the guy knows as cocky (aka, self-confident).   Im sure Ive made this mistake, but I also heard of someone else who recently made this mistake. Imagine this: you are in a job interview and the interviewer asks you can you do this particular skill?  You either answer: a) oh yeah, I can do that. b)  I havent done it before, but Im sure I could learn it. Does that sound familiar? Is this a response you have made, heard, or might make? Let me give you a tip to give a response way, way, way more impactful. Instead of saying a), yeah, I can do that., say something like this: Yes, I can do that.  In my past job I had this exact responsibility.  I was given the task and within six months was training others to do it well. Isnt that 1,000% better than yeah, I can do that. Here is something better to say than b), I havent done it before, but Im sure I could learn it. I havent done that before, but I really think I could learn it quickly.  In my last job I was asked to do learn a new software program we were going to use at the front desk.  No one had any experience with it, but I dove into the user  manuals  and got on the training webinars, and was quickly able to train the rest of the front desk team.  In fact, the software company recognized me as one of their best users and asked if they could refer some of their other key customers to me for consulting. Isnt that impressive?  Much better than yeah, Im sure I could learn it. SHOW ME. Of course you need to have your own, and better, wording.  The idea, though, is to give examples, and what I call mini stories.  If you can get it into a Problem-Action-Result format, your response will be way better than what you were going to say, and probably better than your competition. Want to set up your own not-for-profit University of Manchester Careers Blog Sarah has just published an excellent guest post on working for a not-for-profit recommended reading, particularly if youve got that there must be more to a job than earning more money for some big fat cat New Year feeling. As Amanda, who works for Didsbury Dinners, points out in her guest post, getting funding isnt always the biggest problem, but you do need real passion, a determination to make something happen, and great contacts. If youre a current PhD and want to tentatively explore what it would take to set up your own social enterprise, youve got until Sunday 6th January (yes, that soon!) to apply for a place on our Socially Innovative Researcher Grad School. This is a 3 day residential course, at Chancellors, for PhDs which will give you the chance to work with other PhDs, experts in not-for-profits and interested amateurs (ie people like me, who are acting as facilitators) to find out how its done, work with others with similar passions and see if theres mileage in setting something up to fix whatever social issues you think need sorting. Its free for University of Manchester participants (PhDs at other universities may be able to get their own institutions to pay for a place), and runs from Tuesday 15th January to Thursday 17th January, with a follow-up day on Monday 18th March. 3 Questions to Ask Before the Job Interview You’ve done it! You successfully navigated through your first round of interviews! Congratulations. Now on to round 2. Remember, the HR/company representative you have been working with wants you to succeed in your next round of interviews. When preparing for the 2nd round, get as many details as possible on this round of interviews. Those details include: Who you will be interviewing with and their titles. The type of interview scenario: a series of individual interviews or a panel interview? Most importantly, the specific information you should prepare for. All of this information if crucial as you get ready for the next round of interviews. Second round interview questions tend to go much deeper than the first round’s. These interviews can oftentimes be with multiple individuals, including the person who is hiring you and, most likely, will be your manager. You need as much information as possible to do well in this round of interviews. Consider the following scenario: before your 2nd round interview, you ask the HR representative if there is any information you should prepare for. The HR representative tells you that the company is considering going public and you may be asked for your insight into this situation. You have always worked for public companies and really know nothing about what this transition will entail. However, you do some research and find some key points on how the transition from private to public institution can impact the department you hope to work in. When the hiring manager discusses the public/private transition in your interview, you are able to give a well thought out and articulate answer. Now imagine how that conversation would have gone if you had not done the research. Will you always get this type of help in preparing for your interviews? No. But if you don’t ask these fundamental questions, you may be caught off guard in an interview. Give it a try and see what insights you might glean as you prepare for the 2nd round!
